The Fr. Joseph Skelly, CM Marian-Christo Art Museum is a unique experience for both Marian devotees and art aficionados. The museum contains more than 250 pieces of magnificent Marian and religious art, ranging in date, technique, origin, and subject.
One of the largest collections of Marian artwork in one location, the Art Museum at The Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is for anyone who admires stunning artwork and the myriad artistry of devotion to Mary.
Through viewing the pieces, visitors will not only become acquainted with Our Lady but get to know her as she is portrayed throughout her life: from a young girl to a broken-hearted mother watching her son’s crucifixion and death.
Each piece tells a remarkable story of Mary, as she was envisioned by artists throughout centuries. She is presented by oils on canvas, gilding on wood, and textile prints to name just a few of the mediums. Our Lady is depicted by Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, and Rococo artists.
Fr. Joseph Skelly, CM, founder of the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal (CAMM), curated Marian pieces from around the world. His goal was to make Our Lady better known and loved, and he encouraged people to learn about the Blessed Mother and see how her portrayal in art changes over time. Fr. Skelly believed all of the pieces, including some from the medieval period, were enlightened by faith and inspired by love.
The Art Museum is located on the grounds of The Basilica Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. The recent relocation of the museum provides an additional contemplative, tranquil refuge for guests to visit when planning a trip to the Basilica Shrine.
