There are four physical symbols of The Basilica Shrine.

Tintinnabulum (bells)

The Tintinnabulum of The Basilica Shrine signifies the church’s (or shrine’s) link with the Pope. During the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the Tintinnabulum alerts the people of Rome of the approach of the Holy Father during papal processions.

Ombrellino (umbrella)

The Ombrellino of The Basilica Shrine is a distinctive symbol used in basilicas throughout the world. Designed with yellow and red (traditional papal colors) panels, the silk canopy is a symbol of the Pope’s authority. Once placed, the Ombrellino remains partially open as a sign of readiness to welcome the Holy Father.

Papal Cross Keys

The Papal Cross Keys are the symbol of the Papacy and refer to the promise of Christ to Peter, “I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven; and whatever you lose on earth shall be [lost] in Heaven.” (Matthew 16:19).

CELEBRANT’S CHAIR

The Celebrant’s Chair symbolizes the function of the celebrant priest to preside over Holy Mass and direct prayer. The Basilica Shrine chair is handcrafted of wood and marble.
